A bus engaged in election duty met with an accident near the Fulbari Barrage area in Siliguri after it lost control and fell into a roadside ditch while travelling from Berhampore to Cooch Behar. The incident occurred on Monday and briefly disrupted traffic in the area, prompting a swift response from local police.
The bus, which had a “General Assembly Election 2026” sticker, was reportedly carrying only the driver and a helper at the time of the mishap, preventing any major casualties. Police from the New Jalpaiguri police station reached the spot soon after receiving information, and recovery operations were initiated with the help of a crane. The rear portion of the vehicle sustained visible damage in the accident.
According to the driver, Parimal Debnath, the accident occurred when a cow suddenly came onto the road. In an attempt to avoid hitting the animal, he applied the brakes abruptly, causing the vehicle to lose balance and veer into the ditch. Authorities have started an investigation into the incident as traffic movement in the area returned to normal after initial congestion.
